Fixing Another Locksmith's Mistakes — A Commercial Lock Rescue in Liberty Lake

The Call That Started It All

RC Roofing Specialists in Liberty Lake had a simple problem — a key broke off in the front door of their warehouse. It happens. Commercial doors take a beating, and over time the latch and frame can shift just enough to put extra stress on a key every time someone turns it. A quick extraction and maybe a new cylinder, and you're back in business in under an hour.

That's what should have happened.

When the First Locksmith Made Things Worse

RC Roofing called another locksmith company to come handle it. They showed up 30 minutes late, which is never a great start when your business is locked down. But what happened next was far worse.

Instead of attempting a key extraction first — which is what any experienced locksmith would do — they went straight to drilling the lock. And they didn't even drill it correctly. There's a very specific, professional way to drill a lock when extraction isn't possible. You target the shear line to separate the pins, allowing the cylinder to turn and the lock to release. Done right, it's clean and controlled.

This wasn't that.

They drilled through the cylinder at the wrong angle, shattering the brass housing and destroying multiple parts of the mortise lock assembly. The lock was now in worse shape than when they started. And then — they just left. Walked away. Left RC Roofing completely stranded with a front door that wouldn't open and a destroyed lock assembly.

Greg Gets the Call

That's when someone recommended Precision Lock & Key. The customer called Greg, and he was on-site within half an hour.

When Greg arrived, the situation was rough. The previous locksmith's drilling had jammed the entire mortise lock assembly. The cylinder was shattered, brass shrapnel was lodged inside the mechanism, and the lock body was completely seized up. This wasn't a simple "finish what they started" situation — this was a full rescue operation.

An Hour and a Half of Precision Work

Greg spent the first 30 minutes just getting the lock assembly to budge. The improper drilling had wedged metal fragments into the mechanism, locking everything in place. With patience, the right tools, and eventually a vacuum to clear out all the brass debris and metal shavings, Greg was able to get the door open without causing any additional damage beyond what the first locksmith had already done.

From there, Greg:

- Repaired the broken pieces of the mortise lock assembly - Installed a brand new high-quality mortise cylinder — a proper commercial-grade replacement - Keyed the new cylinder to RC Roofing's existing keys so every employee could still use their original keys without needing new copies - Adjusted the door latch and door frame alignment — this was actually the root cause of the whole problem

The Real Culprit: A Misaligned Door

Here's the thing most people don't realize — the key didn't break because of a bad lock or a defective key. It broke because the door was misaligned. Over time, the warehouse door frame had shifted slightly, causing the latch to bind every time someone locked or unlocked it. That constant extra pressure on the key is what eventually snapped it.

Greg didn't just replace the cylinder and call it done. He made proper adjustments to the door latch and frame so that the key turns smoothly, without any binding or resistance. The door now works better than it did when it was originally installed by the builder of the warehouse.

The Result

After an hour and a half of work — most of it spent undoing another locksmith's mistakes — RC Roofing's front door was fully operational. New cylinder, repaired assembly, realigned door, and a lock that works like butter.

The customer's reaction? He was genuinely shocked that the key now turns and unlocks the door without any issue. No forcing it, no wiggling, no fighting with it. Just smooth, effortless operation.

That's the Precision difference. We don't cut corners, we don't drill first and ask questions later, and we definitely don't leave customers stranded. We show up, we diagnose the real problem, and we fix it right — even if that means cleaning up someone else's mess first.
